Shannon Kane (she/her) MSW, BSW, RCSW, RSW
I love what I do. I feel honoured to hear Client stories. These stories have taken hold during some of the most difficult times of their lives and they now want to move through them, work on healing and make sense of what happened.
From my experience, I know people want to be heard and know that something can help them heal from the pain they are in. My practice focuses on: trauma across the lifespan, the effects of this trauma, perinatal trauma, childbirth trauma, dissociation as a result of trauma, mental health challenges and adjustment difficulties during the perinatal period.
My office setting is quiet, confidential, private and welcoming. Babies are welcome.
I have always loved working with parents, but until I became a mother I didn’t fully understand what this transition was all about. Being a mother is for me, as I think it is for most, a great joy and a great struggle. I am informed in my practice by my education, my own experience with postpartum depression, knowledge from my Clients, current research and my clinical training. My clinical work is from a non-judgemental and trauma informed place.
Professionally, I have worked as a social worker for 20 years, became engaged with the birth world and developed my expertise in perinatal mental health and trauma over the past 13 years. I have training from many of the leaders in perinatal mental health and trauma, including the Postpartum Stress Centre and am listed on their website as a trained professional (PPSC list of professionals.) I am a trained counsellor for highly sensitive people (HSP professionals). I have been a speaker for local/international agencies on perinatal mental health and birth trauma therapy.
My work experience includes: Alberta Health Services, YWCA, Employee assistance programs, Private Practice and Louise Dean Centre. It is my passion to be part of the work with individuals and families in the area of prenatal and postnatal mental health, birth trauma and birth story work. “In order to begin, you need only be as strong, as capable, as ready as you are right now.”
